Update as of June 26th, 2008
Dusk is still being completed and should be out at the end of this year or early next year. 3 chapters have been completed and the 4 one is moving along. The current penciller is Jolene Houser. She's a new to comics as a penciller but she's got a lot talent and is learning fast.

So I appreciate everyone's patience as I get the graphic novel out and I assure you it will be well worth the wait.

Hello, my name is David Doub and I'm aspiring comic book writer. And what I specifically mean by "aspiring" as in not only do I really love comics and I honestly feel that I have a knack for writing them, but I'm at a point in my life that I want a serious career change and if I'm going to change I might as well and try to realize my dream career.

My biggest success to date is the vampire comic Dusk, available from Ambrosia Publishing.

Read Dusk here

Dusk comes from my long fascination with vampire stories and lore and with my current disappointment with how vampires are currently viewed in Pop Culture (as a Hollywood Action Star basically). I'm not trying to make a grand vampire epic or anything, just tell good solid vampire stories that deal with the traditional vampire concepts of damnation, redemption, temptation, and sensuality.

I always have concepts and scripts I'm trying to get done, so I'm always on the look out for an artists. Sadly since I have other expenses in my life, I can't afford to pay an artist up front for such work. But honestly I would like an artist that wants to do the work, but I fully understand that the bills have to be paid.

I'm more than open to talking to other comic creators about the creative process and I'm more than willing to offer my opinions :)

You want me to write a review based on the first chapter alone?

Well the first chapter was written to stand on it's on, all 32 pages of it. So I figure if it doesn't work well as a story into itself, then I did something wrong.

If you prefer you can wait to review it until all 4 chapters are out.

Have you heard of the Dallas Comic Con? There's one this weekend and they have one in October. I usually either attend or have a table out there. www.scifiexpo.com. It's cheaper and more quaint than Wizard World. Maybe we could even collab on a project sometime?

I need to get out to Dallas, My good friend Richard Dominguez who created EL Gato Negro is out there and he keeps telling me to go and check it out...I'm involved in the War of the Independents along with Aym Geronimo and Bluewing, alos from the Dallas/ Ft Worth area...I'm defintely going to try my hardest to get out to WWTX this year!

and as far as collabs, what did you have in mind?

I've worked some with Scottie Ray Watson (aka Swat) who's character Talon is in the War of the Independents (and just got the most votes ever in the Small Press Idol). Dallas Comic Con is a nicer place to meet with fans and other creators.

Well for collabs, I am working on a "Monster Squad" story for PostiveBrand.net (which are out of Dallas too) and I can't seem to get the right feel for it.

David,

Check out our latest comicbook, RoboPlanet. (positivebrand.net) Tony Pacitti wrote it and I did the art. Tell me how you like it. I'd love to get your feedback.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi, David! Thanks for the add.

My favorite Wonder Woman writer is George Perez. I enjoyed Rucka's run, but could not stand Jiminez'. I am looking forward to Jodi Picoult's run. I am very excited to finally have a writer that seems dedicated. What do you think about her upcoming run?

I'm hopeful about Jodi Picoult's run, but then I was hopeful of Allan Heinberg's run and that been underwhelming.

Hi David,

Sorry about your loss man. I hope your project makes it all the way.

Hi there! We’re starting up this year’s Small Press Idol…and wanted to invite you to the grand unveiling of this year’s Guidelines. I apologize for the all-in-one nature of this. At this time, individuals and teams have a little over a month to get things together and be ready to post their Round 1 entries. Round 1 will last till March 25th. It’s a solid window to get a project together and qualified for Round 2 past our judge panel. If you are interested in being a contestant, this is fair warning to get a project going!
If you are a news outlet or resource of any sort, we invite you to help spread the word about Small Press Idol, and get on the official Sponsors and Supporters list on the Idol Main Page. Traditionally, the page has gotten hundreds of thousands of hits a month for the 5 months the contest runs. All we ask in return for the link placement on our prominently placed list, is a link back in some way that is fairly prominent, and that you indeed cover the contest if you are a news site. You can contact us about that right from the guidelines page.
Just want to watch the show? That’s great! Now is time to sign up at the site so you can VOTE in the rounds to come, and post comments about your favorites! We’re expecting hundreds of contestants this year. It should be a lot of fun!

/Idol07/index.html

Hope this message reaches you in the spirit it was intended, you are welcome to ask questions, and otherwise make sure this is for real. This is the fourth year for the SPI. Last year’s contest pages are still online. So that’s what this is about, hope it interests you!
