When 'Little Miss Popular' Ruby Kaye lands a pair of super-tech glasses in a game of Strip Poker, she's granted flight, super-strength, and--due to a flaw in the glasses' programming--super-klutziness.

Hi!

I'm a comics writer, currently making a bid to break into big-league comics (indies & the Big Two).

I've had various small press things published, and I came Second in a Wizard Talent Search contest, and runner-up in the AK Comics Talent Search.

My comic Merc Wars is currently in the works, to be published by Arcana Comics.

I am the creator/writer of Rebecca Black, Glass City, San Francisco Bay, Double Team: the Super-Powered Male Escort Agency, and Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman (below).

Art by Fernando Melek & Gaston Zubeldia.

(All the above Copyright © 2008 Sam Johnson.)

My favorite comic, and biggest influence, is Grant Morrison's version of the Doom Patrol, and I'm digging the current Geoff Johns-revamped take on the team--I think there's great potential there; and DC Comics Editors, if you're receptive to a DP mini-series pitch, I think I COULD COOK YOU UP A MEAN ONE! And I'd be more than happy to send you a copy of my Rebecca Black comic to give you a taste of the kind of shenanigans I'd have in store for the World's Weirdest!

It's so passe to say "Thanks for the Add!" now. So I will just say... "Much Appreciation for the acquisition."

I read through the samples of San Francisco Bay and really dug it. Compelling characters and really great drama. When/where can I pick up the full issues?

Now it's your turn... I think you may dig "The Life & Music of Roscoe Porter". You can read the whole story at the Melee Comics website for free. Chaos! is also totally fun but doesn't have a whole lot of meat to it as far as story goes.

Let me know what you think!

Hey Sam! San Francisco Bay has a lot going for it. Any criticisms I may have had were already mentioned by HeadPress, and you've already addressed them.

Keep up the good work!

[ Posted by zebramag on Feb 19th, 2007 7:19 PM ]...

Thanks for the add and the preview.

This reminds me of the British anthology comic, Trident. I really enjoy the narrative style, kind of Mike Leigh meets Raymond Carver. I'm very intrigued to see more.

Best of luck!

[ Posted by HeadPress on Feb 17th, 2007 7:23 PM ]...

Not a bad preview...story telling good, it flows nicely, good variance of shots. The only question I have is that though it's nice little scene it doesn't give me insight on what this book on the whole is about. Is the main focus one of the characters in this scene who work at the bank...or is the bank robbery a key jumping off point for the story...or is the focus on those robbing the bank?

If I'm a publisher trying to decide if it's something I wanted to publish...by this preview I really don't know what genre it falls into.

Thanks for the comments, Bob! I appreciate your taking the time.

As for being unclear about what the book as a whole is about, here`s the pitch, which should clear that up...

In the wake of an armed robbery in which TERI MARSDEN and ERIC TAYLOR were traumatized and their friend/JERRY TURNER`s best friend, SANDRA, was shot dead: JERRY lays, depressed and drinking, on his couch, in the day--watching old videos of BearCub: the TV show he writes (and should be working on now); and TERI and ERIC`s relationship is experiencing difficulties--it`s not working properly anymore and they`re not having sex.
...Enter CAT PARKER and DANIEL JAVINS: to shake up their worlds!

Hi Sam , thanks for the comments on our page! I went through your comic gallery (San Francisco Bay) and enjoyed it very much. Best of luck with that! And the super powered male escort agency? I think you're onto a winner there lol!

Good to see you out there scouring for artists. With clear publisher interest on your manga project, you should soon be flooded with artists!

But hey! You ought to learn to do your own lettering on the computer. Its a useful skill for writers that gives you finel control over the language.

Hi Pat; going well so far, I was getting concerned that things had ground to a halt in the art department on my new project-for-submission GOLD TOWN, but I've just been in contact with the artist and it was just down to the holidays/Russian vodka, and we're gonna start rolling again.

I've also been communicating with an up-and-coming DC artist about putting a mini-series proposal together to submit to them, and I've sent him one of my books to look at before we go any further, so don't wanna say too much about that at this stage, 'cos we'll see what happens.

How're you? You working on anything? (by the way, I took another look at your site, and your coloring's terrific!)

Hiya Sam! Nice to meetcha!

And thanks for your interest and flattering comments about my work. I am not averse to the sample page and pitch process in principle, and spent a goodly chunk of last year putting a handful of proposals out... but currently several of them seem to have born fruit and I am stacked up with work until well into next year.

And I guess I should put it out there but, I'm not really irritated with my writer. Stuff comes up, we get stalled, and its all happened to me before. In fact I got got more script today and have pencilled and inked two more pages tonight already. Plus the story is terrific. You'll like it when it appears starting next month.

However it leaves me with little time or psychic energy to start anything new in the forseeable future. BTW, my next two projects have scripts done.... one of them I co-wrote with A. David Lewis and expect to get started on in March.

But keep us all informed as your new projects develop. I'm not really a manga artist, but you never know. And my sympathies about the artist problem. You're not alone... though that's not much help, I'm sure.

[ Posted by JimmyKitty on Dec 16th, 2006 11:49 PM ]...

Sam,

Glad you contacted me... I need those reminders! It's been insane lately at the house of Image (as noted on my micro-blog on my page). But YES, I got REBECCA BLACK and thought it was damn cool! Expect something in return. But you know the character I leaned to the most? The Minger. She's got backstory. And please pray to god it's not just who I think it is, but someone completely different.

I liked the writing... and you sure put the artists to work, a few tough panels there (the Ranch Bar, et.) So what's next for you now?

[ Posted by mickmoart on Dec 16th, 2006 11:21 PM ]...

In the next year, I hope to be in at least 2 more comics. It is just a matter of seeing what I can be worked in and stuff.

But I keep going, despite the health problems and stuff. It is just a matter of going on with my visions I suppose.

:)

[ Posted by mickmoart on Dec 16th, 2006 6:14 PM ]...

Wow, it is quite an accomplishment when you put out 2 full comics out. I remember those days.

This year has been remarkable, cause I was worked into 10 comics. Mostly Furrlough stuff.

It has been cool.
